Melody Blue Spix Macaw
After a long period filled with worry and speculation, Brazilians and German conservationists managed to successfully bring a group of couples back to their natural habitat. Their story is inspiring however, it is also filled with backbiting and jealousies.
The first challenge was to find enough birds to trade. The macaws were monogamous so it was crucial to match the pairs well.

Range
A South African couple has taken on the task of saving the critically endangered Spix's macaw. The bird was declared extinct by the United Nations in 2000 due to decades of habitat destruction and poaching. They have a small number of the birds kept in captivity, and are hoping to release them in the wild near Curaca. They refer to the birds as their blue-eyed friends and have compared their journey to the story of Presley, the last known Spix's macaw in the wild. They describe Presley as a true survivor, who lost his family but remained loyal to his area. They feel a strong bond to him and view their lives as identical to his.
The discovery of the last Spix's macaw provided researchers with an opportunity to study its behavior in the wild and gain a deeper understanding of why this species survived so long. This enabled researchers to estimate the population of this unique bird more precisely. Researchers were able to collect important data about the bird's movements throughout the day, seasonal adjustment to drought, and food habits. Researchers also observed attempts to reproduce using a hybrid Spix’s and Illiger’s macaw couple which was a crucial step in the recovery for this species.
It was an amazing feat that this bird managed to endure and thrive in the wild despite the smallest gene pool and it has also helped scientists to understand how these birds can be returned to the wild. The survival of the last bird inspired people to take action to save other parrots and threatened species. This has also encouraged zoos to develop their own captive breeding program for these exotic species of birds.
This working group is a good illustration of how conservation groups as well as other organizations and individuals can work together to protect endangered animals and wildlife. Habitat

The Spix's macaw is native to a tiny area of northeast Brazil known as the Caatinga an arid area of flat savannah scrubland that is dotted with creeks that flow through the seasons and gallery forests. The first time it was described was in 1819 and is among of the least-known Neotropical parrots, despite only occasional sightings in the wild and a few birds that are kept in captivity and some museum specimens.
To protect the declining population To help save the declining population, a global group was formed. It brought together aviculturists who held the last remaining bird as well as officials from the government. This group formed a partnership with the world-renowned non-profit organisation Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) of Qatar to establish a rigorous program to reintroduce captive-bred Spix's macaws into their natural habitat in the northeast of Brazil.
AWWP has purchased and is restoring 2,380 hectares in the Caatinga close to Curaca (Brazil) of prime habitat. AWWP also breeds and raises birds to be released in the wild. This will create the genetically pure source of animals for the future generations.
Spix's Macaws can be found in trees, and are seldom seen on the ground. They typically nest in hollows or holes in trees and hunt for fruits as well as seeds, nuts, and other plants. They can spend up to one third of the day in the nest.
To aid in tracking the Spix's macaws as well as their movements, a local group was invited to join the field team. The members of the community were given watches that could be activated in the event the Spix's macaw was detected and thereby allowing them to keep on top of the birds' movements and their daily movements in the wild. This method has proven successful.
Diet
The Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is the only species found in the genus Cyanopsitta. It was declared extinct in the wild in 2019 by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature following the disappearance of the last known wild parrot disappeared in the year 2000. subsequent surveys did not find any additional birds. However, a reintroduction program is in the process of trying to bring back this critically endangered bird back to its natural habitat in Caatinga.
The northeast region of Brazil comprises about 10% of the entire country. Spix's Macaws nested in the hollows of the old caraibeira trees, and they were also recognized for their dietary habits of eating seeds and nuts.
A reintroduction program is now underway to establish a natural population of the Spix's Macaw. Eight birds raised in captivity were released into the wild in June, and 12 more are expected to arrive in 2022. They will be joined by a group of Blue-winged macaws who were reintroduced. They will share information about food sources, nesting and areas to roost.

Like all parrots, Spix's Macaws are social birds that have a strong bond with their parents. They are very vocal and often imitate human speech and other sounds. They have a mating call called "whichaka," described as an extremely short and repetitive noise similar to an acoustic note. They are often seen flying fast and high when they are in a breeding mood.
Breeding
Spix's Macaws are extremely intelligent and social birds. They communicate using screeching, squawking, and other sounds. Like many parrots, they are able to mimic human speech. They have a very strict routine that includes flight patterns and bathing habits. They can also recognize other members of their flock. This is what makes them so popular pets and a target for illegal bird trade.
In the early 1980s only three Spix's Macaws were left in the wild, with all of them poached. In 1995, poachers killed both male and female birds in a plan to pair them. Since since then, all Spix's Macaws are captive-bred, mostly in Brazil.
The few Spix's macaws kept in captivity are a mix of individuals that are the descendants of only two individuals, leaving them at risk of disease and other environmental issues. The majority of Spix's macaws in captivity reside in a breeding center in Germany. However this year, an agreement between a German conservation center and the Brazilian government expired, leaving the possibility of repatriation or reintroduction into the wild in doubt.
Despite their petty numbers the captive-bred Spix's macaws exhibit some signs of improvement. This was evident when a Swiss breeder managed to beat a sheikh in Qatar to buy from a collector three Spix's Macaws that were not part of the breeding program.
As a result of this and other efforts, the captive-bred birds are beginning to reproduce, though not at a high rate. Maintaining their health and generating will be crucial for reintroducing these birds to the wild. The selection of the right birds to release is also critical. Macaws must be reproductively mature, and they should be in a relationship with an older sibling or close family member.
The return of the Spix's Macaw to the wild could prove difficult, but it is essential to try. ABC and its partners have developed a reserve system to protect the last remaining habitats of this species. The eight Spix's Macaws who were released recently will be joined by the blue-winged Macaws. These macaws are more common in Caatinga, and they live in areas where the Spix’s macaws also reside. These birds will help macaws adapt to their new environment and will also ensure safety through numbers.
